News Coverage March 2009

March 25, 2009— The Burlington Free Press —“29% of Schools Miss Goal”
Twenty-nine percent of Vermont public schools missed annual academic performance goals under the federal education reform law known as the No Child Left Behind Act, Vermont education officials reported Tuesday. Most of the 88 schools that came in under the bar have missed goals more than once, pushing the number of so-called "identified" schools up to 77, or 26 percent -- about twice the number that were in the doghouse last year. Only one school in the state -- Colchester Middle School -- exited the school improvement classification with sustained increases in standardized test scores.

March 19, 2009— BusinessWeek —“Why the U.S. is Losing Foreign Graduates
Foreign students who graduate from U.S. universities with degrees in science and engineering are increasingly leaving the U.S. to pursue job opportunities in their home countries, according to a report released on Mar. 19. The report, called "Losing the World's Best and Brightest," warns that "the departure of these foreign nationals could represent a significant loss for the U.S. science and engineering workforce, where these immigrants have played increasingly larger roles over the past three decades."
