Do boys lose out when girls start to do better in math? Do girls' successes lead to a "boy crisis"? An important new study says the answer is a definitive no. When girls do better in society, both sexes benefit. Gender equity is good for everybody.

January 20, 2012 — U.S. News & World Report (Opinion) — “Rep. Mike Honda and Peter Cleveland: Congressman Proposes STEM Education Office”
As our nation's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce heads toward retirement, too few students are equipped to serve as the next generation of global innovators. Program for International Student Assessment comparisons from 2009 show American students ranking 17th out of 34 in science literacy, and 25th out of 34 in math literacy, among students from developed countries. These numbers are a crisis. These numbers are an urgent call to action.

January 19, 2012 — Palm Beach Post  (Editorial) — “Charge Same for All Degrees”
The Florida Board of Governors' strategic plan for the state's university system for 2012-25 includes doubling the number of undergraduate degrees awarded in science, technology, engineering and math and tripling graduate degrees in those fields by 2025. Dr. Barron gave his solution in testimony before the Florida House Committee on Education. "I would charge the STEM students more," said Dr. Barron, "and give them something better." Better still would be raising tuition for all students, to bring Florida in line with public universities across the country.

As the United States enters 2012, a growing number of college graduates are being held back with student loan debt. As a society, by pushing students into the STEM subjects, we can reduce the time student loan debt is carried by individuals.

January 11, 2012 — Anchorage Daily News (Opinion) — “Grant Baker, Rob Lang, and Todd Bergman: Engineering Program Growing, Needs Support”
The engineering profession is directly tied to the generation of income. For example, every construction project for new development or infrastructure depends upon engineers. It is important to the future of Alaska to keep engineering jobs in the state.

February 07, 2012 — Associated Press — “New Obama Plan to Help Math, Science Teacher Prep”
President Barack Obama will announce on Tuesday a new plan to prepare math and science teachers when he hosts the second White House Science Fair. The White House says his upcoming budget will seek $80 million from Congress for a new Education Department competition to support math and science teacher preparation programs. Among the other related initiatives he'll announce is $22 million in investments from the private sector to support math and science efforts, the White House said.

January 25, 2012 — Philly Burbs — “Creating Young Engineers, Inventors in Mount Laurel”
Harrington Middle School students are exploring the ocean with underwater technology they’re constructing in Maureen Barrett’s science class. And fifth-graders at the nearby Hartford School are creating a variety of new products with teacher Lorraine Allen. The course requires the children to research and test principles of invention. Both initiatives are part of the district’s new STEM program, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, all working together. Started in the fall, it is open to students in fifth, seventh and eighth grades as a component of the science curriculum.

January 25, 2012 — U.S. News & World Report — “Obama Pushes STEM in State of The Union”
President Obama once again put the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) crisis front and center in his State of the Union address. "Think about the America within our reach: A country that leads the world in educating its people. An America that attracts a new generation of high-tech manufacturing and high-paying jobs," he said.

January 25, 2012 — Examiner — “NASA to Inspire Georgia Educators With STEM Lesson Saturday”
Educators from across north Georgia will descend upon Warner Robins AFB on Saturday to interact with NASA technicians as they promote the importance of science and math skills for America's future engineers and scientists.

January 24, 2012 — Wall Street Journal — “Average Silicon Valley Tech Salary Passes $100,000”
Average annual salaries for Silicon Valley technology workers surpassed the $100,000 mark last year, according to a new survey, pushed higher by the strength of the region's latest boom. ... Last year, several of the companies—including LinkedIn Corp. and Zynga—went public, with Facebook poised for an initial public offering this year. Their success has sparked the creation of numerous new start-ups, which in turn has spurred a hiring war for software engineers and others.
